Josh has arrived in Kenya

Josh finished his week and weekend with some unproductive house searching in Gulu, walking around Gulu, and then a trip back to the capital, Kampala, where he met up with missionaries in Kampala and some doctors there. Today, he flew to Kenya and within a few hours of arriving in Kenya he made it through customs, passport control, took a taxi to a shopping center, and met up with missionary friends who drove him to Kijabe where he ate pizza for dinner and got on email! Different world, all together!

He will spend the next few days in familiar territory in Kijabe, Kenya meeting with old and new friends exploring medical options for Gracie but primarily learning more about curriculum development and teaching remote pastors from more experienced men at Moffat Bible College. Late Friday night he'll get back to Nairobi and start his journey home for a Saturday afternoon arrival into Boston.

We'll be glad to have him home, but mostly anxious to hear about his adventures, discoveries, and plans in person!

Hello Abby,

My name is Matt St. Pierre. I serve with the Christian Alliance for Orphans, which is a coalition of more than fifty respected Christian ministries committed to adoption, foster care and global orphan care. We’ve really appreciated some of your blog posts on this front, and wanted to ask if you’d be willing to be a part of an effort we’re now organizing.

A core goal of the Alliance is uniting believers to work together on these issues and to speak with a united voice on behalf of orphans. As we’ve seen through recent initiatives like Orphan Sunday, our voice and impact is far more powerful when we’re interconnected and working in unison.

So, we wanted to ask if you’d be willing to be part of our “Bloggers for Orphans” team. All that would involve is us sharing with you an occasional (rarely more than once a month) issue or opportunity that you could choose to highlight on your blog. These would likely range from ways individuals can become more involved in orphan issues (such as Orphan Sunday or the annual Alliance Summit) to newly-released data on orphans. There’d be no obligation—just an occasional email, and our appreciation. You could certainly feel free to cut-and-paste things we share…or give it your own language and analysis…or not use it all.

Please let me know if you’d be willing to be a part of this at matt@christianalliancefororphans.org!

With Appreciation,

Matt

Check out this progress!

A year ago, my friend Rachel http://josiecomehome.blogspot.com/ emailed a photo of her beautiful son standing on his own... I've since dreamed of having a photo to post of Gracie doing the same thing. It was always one of those wild-don't-think-it'll-ever-happen kind of dreams, a romantic, fairy tale type of dream. But this week, Gracie made another leap in development and muscle tone. It started when I leaned her up against the wall and planted her feet a shoulder-width apart. For the first time, she didn't lunge for the safety of my arms or hands, but rather, she allowed herself to stand steadily on her own two feet and she kept her center of gravity centered over her feet instead of wildly in front of her or to one side or the other. She even quickly figured out that she couldn't lurch around in excitement while standing on her own two feet with no support but a wall behind her back, but rather had to express her excitement over this new development with a gentl...

Family of Three!

We are in Liberia - the electricity goes in and out because the generator is having trouble keeping up these days! So hopefully it will stay on long enough to post and the internet connection will allow me this luxury! We were united with precious Gracie on Thanksgiving day - I will write more about this later. But, oh! is Gracie a joy! She is so beautiful, so joyfilled, and a bit mischievious. Her physical limitations do not permit her to accomplish much mischief, but we can tell that she is trying to push some limits already. If we were not in love with her already, she is irresitable and such a treasure and blessing from God. In our two days together, she has not cried once. She spends most of her days smiling, she loves to snuggle (good match for us!), and has the most contagious laugh! Life takes more effort for her - her cerebral palsy is moderate and every activity is a challenge and is clearly tiring for her. Meal times (which she loves) take a long time and much patience and d...
